AI features are popping up everywhere so it’s no surprise to see Meta add them as well. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re talking some big news from Meta about their new AI assistant feature. Meta’s AI assistant is now on Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger. They’re really going all-in on this AI race. There’s even a standalone website at Meta.ai.
Meta’s AI Assistant
Meta has been working on AI for a while, and Llama 3 is the newest version of its open source large language model. Meta AI uses Llama 3 which Meta claims is the most intelligent AI assistant around.
The Meta AI assistant integrates real-time search results from both Bing and Google.

The prompt “ask Meta AI anything” shows up whenever you click on the search bar in Instagram and Facebook. It also shows up as a chat on messaging apps Messenger and WhatsApp.
In addition to text answers, the Imagine feature lets you create images from text in real-time.

Do You Want AI in Your Social Media Feed?
Not everyone is happy about including the AI assistant in their social media feeds and chats. Meta AI’s already made a blunder or two. An official Meta AI chatbot inserted itself into a conversation in a private Facebook group for Manhattan moms, claiming that it, too, had a child in the New York City school district. It apologized when confronted.
In another instance, the AI bot offered for sale a “gently used” Canon camera after a user posted looking for one in a local Buy Nothing group.
It’s still early days, and for those who do not want this functionality in your social platforms, there are ways to adjust your settings to minimize its presence.
AI is not going away, that’s for sure. Open AI just released Chat GPT-4o and is working on Chat GPT-5, Google has a new version of its Gemini model, and Microsoft is rumored to be working on its own model as well. Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI recently said that Chat GPT-4 is “the dumbest model” you’ll ever use.
