Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode we’re talking about TikTok, the social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short videos.
Bob: That’s right Donna. The app is used by more and more people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy, and lip-syncing. It allows users to create videos and share them across a community.
Donna: And a lot of people are viewing them. TikTok announced in a recent blog post that 1 billion people use their app every month. So that’s about one in seven-and-a-half people in the world who are regularly watching short-form videos of dancing and other random silliness.
Bob: Wow. To put all this in context, Facebook said in June, that it had 2.9 billion monthly active users, and they’re up 7% over last year. Do you think this TikTok app will be good for businesses?
Donna: Sure, why not? While you can certainly do funny lip-sync videos, there’s options you could do to promote your business on TikTok, like you would with other video apps. For example, you can introduce yourself and your team with a fun theme song, or tour of your workplace so users can see where the magic happens. You can share an inspirational or success story, or capture your corporate canine running around the office. You can do serious educational or how-to content as well.
Bob: As a business owner you have another real opportunity here. You may have heard of the 80/20 rule where 20% is responsible for 80% of results. Well there is a 1% internet rule where roughly 99% of the people only consume content, they don’t create any content. If you are a creator you are part of the 1%. Anything you can do to promote your business is great, you just need to remember that TikTok users like fun and creative videos.
Donna: Now we’re not telling you that you should go right off on TikTok and start doing all of this stuff. The point we are trying to get across is that people consume a lot of content online, and your audience may or may not be on TikTok, but they are somewhere online. So where is your educational content? Where is your story? How are you telling about your products and services?
Bob: That’s it for today’s episode. You can find a link to the TechCrunch article and a transcript of today’s podcast, at DelosInc.com/208.
