Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you.
In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode we’re talking about the popularity of audio for podcasts and social media using apps like Clubhouse, and how Facebook now wants to be your one stop shop for everything audio.
Bob: Yes Donna, this is true. Facebook has noted how popular audio is and is rolling out a full spectrum of tools to make it easy to record, share, and participate in audio experiences.
Donna: Right, to make it easy to record, Facebook is building a set of new audio creation tools. They want everyone to have a sound studio in their pocket. You’ll be able to use music from Facebook’s Sound Collection in the background of your story, have the ability to mix audio tracks, use sound effects, voice effects and filters, so it should be a lot of fun too. With these new audio tools, they want you to create what they’re calling “Soundbites” — These are short-form, audio clips for anecdotes and stories, jokes, or inspirational sayings. Facebook is testing Soundbites over the next few months with a small number of creators before rolling it out to everyone.
Bob: Wow, that will be cool. Facebook has also recognized that more than 35 million people are members of fan groups around podcasts, and right now you have to leave Facebook to listen to those podcasts. So they announced that within the next few months, you’ll be able to listen to podcasts directly on the Facebook app — both while using the app or when the app is in the background.
Donna: Yes, and similar to the app Clubhouse, Facebook is now testing Live Audio Rooms, where people can chat in real time. They’re initially testing the feature in Facebook Groups and with public figures, but it will be available to everyone on the Facebook app and in Messenger by the summer. Facebook really wants to be your everything app for text, images, video and now audio.
Bob: You’ll be able to record a live conversation and turn it into a podcast for everyone to listen to it later or share the best snips from a live audio or podcast as Soundbites. Plus. Facebook is going to offer captions on all these audio experiences to make them accessible to all.
Donna: The accessibility and captions are really great as not everyone can listen out loud when they are surfing. Facebook is also looking for ways for creators to monetize these features, for example by charging a subscription for access to a Live Room.
