In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode we’re talking about the new social media platform, Clubhouse. Clubhouse is an audio-only real time chatting app. You listen in to conversations, interviews and discussions between people on any topic. Think of it like a podcast, but live, and you can join the conversation, if you want to.

Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode we’re talking about the new kids on the block in social media platforms. These are audio-only, real time chatting apps.
Bob: That’s right Donna and Clubhouse is the leader here. It’s an app. And right now it is an invitation only beta for iOS users. There’s no desktop or Android version at this time, and with Clubhouse, you can host conversations on any topic by starting a “room”. People can listen in and you can also invite people on the “stage” to join in the conversation.
Donna: Think of it a little bit like a live, interactive podcast where the listeners can also join in. There’s no video, no pictures, and hardly any text, it’s all just audio. And you have to be present. Conversations are not saved. You can start a room at any time, or schedule one and let people know when you’ll be there.
Bob: Sounds like a good app for people who like to talk.
Donna: That’s true, but you do have to be a good conversationalist to be a room host or moderator. The upside is that you don’t have to be on camera though, so you can be conversing or listening in while you are making dinner or doing laundry.
Bob: This is a great opportunity for some businesses, but don’t feel you have to jump right in. As always, you have to think about who your audience is. If your audience is always buying the latest greatest gadgets and looking for a new exciting thing, then right now this might be the good platform for you as the early adopters are here. On the other hand if your client has just figured out Facebook, you can ignore this platform without feeling any FOMO, you know, the fear of missing out!
Donna: There’s only about 10,000,000 users right now which seems like a lot, but it’s not necessarily and it’s still a beta, but the buzz has already sparked some imitators. Twitter has announced it is testing “Spaces”, an audio only conversation area and Facebook reportedly has a competitor in the works as well, it’s codename: “Fireside”. One thing is for sure is that social media doesn’t stand still, but that doesn’t mean you have to be everywhere. Focus your message on your ideal client and where they are.
Bob: That’s it for today’s episode. If you’re interested in Clubhouse, go to your Apple app store and reserve your spot, and a transcript of today’s podcast, at DelosInc.com/176.
