Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re talking about ways to grow your email list by using Facebook and Instagram ads. These can be an effective way to add subscribers from a wider audience who may not already know you from your organic marketing.
Bob: That right Donna. We’ve talked a lot in the past about how your email list is valuable and is probably the most effective way to get a message directly to your customers and prospects. But to gain new subscribers through advertising, you’re going to have to create a Lead Magnet or Offer.
Donna: Yes, you want to give people a reason to subscribe. A lead magnet is content that your subscriber wants or needs and will be willing to exchange their email address for. This could be a PDF checklist or guide, a video series, or even a quiz. Whatever form it takes, your lead magnet should provide incredible value. If you are a business with products and services an offer could also be made to trade for their email address. For example free shipping or a 20% off coupon.
Bob: Those are great ideas. But to run a Facebook ad, you need a solid stand-alone landing page with one clear call-to-action to persuade them to subscribe. One of the mistakes we frequently see is sending traffic to the homepage of your website and expecting your audience to figure out what to do next. Make your ad mobile-optimized because most of your traffic is likely to be via mobile when using Facebook ads. And the page should load quickly to ensure people stick around to see the page load so they can sign up.
Donna: These are great points. Once subscribers have provided their email and details, they’ll expect to receive your lead magnet or offer in their inbox right away, so use an email marketing service to accomplish this. Craft your first email to welcome new subscribers and explain what they can expect from you in future emails. Your next emails should then move those subscribers through a journey to get to know, like, and trust you.
Bob: Having your emails automated is great, because once you set it up, it’s done. Go to Facebook Ads Manager to create your Facebook and Instagram ad campaign to bring people to your sign-up page. Target your ads to characteristics of your ideal customers. And don’t forget to track the effectiveness of your ads. It takes a few days to have Facebook’s algorithm optimize delivery, so give it time before you make changes, but you will want to make improvements to the ad over time.
Donna: The bottom line is this. Facebook ads can be a very effective way to grow your email list, provided you’re offering something of value to your target audience. Make sure your ads and your landing page have a strong call-to-action to persuade the visitor to exchange their email address for your offer.
