Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re talking about creating blog content that gets you better marketing results.
Bob: A lot of people struggle with this Donna. We often hear how people are not sure what type of content they should be writing about.
Donna: You say writing, but I want to interject that if you are more comfortable with video or a podcast instead of writing words, the concepts are still going to apply.
Bob: That’s true. You have to remember first, who you are talking to? What are the pain points and problems that your audience has? Your content should be about their problems and how you, as an expert, can solve those problems.
Donna: I know you know what these are too because if I asked you as a potential customer, how you can help with a certain problem, you most likely are not going to say I don’t have any content so I can’t answer that.
Bob: Think about the most common issues that come up, the things that you explain over and over again, the questions your team answers all the time. People are searching for these things.
Donna: Yes, a good rule of thumb that I use is that if you find yourself telling the same story three or more times to people, that’s a good candidate for a blog post. This can help from a customer service and experience perspective too. When someone has a question you can quickly direct them to the article or video that explains it, even if you don’t have time to go into the explanation yourself at that moment. The key thing that you want to be thinking about is what problems are you solving, and how are you bringing your expertise to solve them. That is your core content.
Bob: You’ll also want to have a mix of content types on your blog as well.
Donna: Right, think about different stages of the buyer’s journey and what people need to know at different points – are they researching, are they ready to buy, or do they need information after the sale? Have a mix of topics, and these might be evergreen, current news, or also tell the story of your organization so your human side comes through.
