Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re going to talk about some changes that Instagram is testing. When scrolling your feed, you’ll no longer see the number of likes on posts of people you follow.
Bob: Wow, that’s going to be a huge change for a lot of users, don’t you think?
Donna: Well, not everyone will be affected initially, but some people already see this in their feed. Instagram says they are doing this so there is not so much pressure on people to get likes.
Particularly for young people, the quest for likes is not always a good thing.
Bob: From a marketing perspective, the good news is that likes will not be disappearing altogether – rather, they will just be hidden to followers. You’ll be able to view how many likes you get on your own posts with just a couple taps.
Your followers can tap into your post and scroll through to add up the likes, but there will be no actual number of likes shown or immediate indication of how many people liked the post.
Donna: There is speculation that another reason Instagram is doing this is because it has become highly curated and people are posting less often. So there are a lot more staged, perfect posts, but fewer of them and they want to encourage more posting and more experimentation, without the pressure of every post having to get so many likes.
You should look at this as an opportunity to get more creative with your content and messages, encourage comments, and make sure you are using relevant hashtags.
Bob: That’s it for today’s episode. You can find the link to the article and a transcript of today’s podcast at DelosInc.com/119.
