Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you.
Happy New Year! I love new beginnings, and this is also the time of year for predictions for the upcoming year. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re going to talk about some digital marketing trends for 2020 that we learned about in an article on Jeff Bullas’s website.
The first trend of note is the use of chatbots and the rise of machine artificial intelligence. I was surprised to find that in a recent survey within the millennial demographic, 40% of the people that responded say they interact with chatbots on a daily basis.
Facebook messenger is a popular platform for chatbots and it lets you do everything from order a Domino’s pizza, get a wine recommendation from Lidl, or get your favorite team can and delivery from Bud Light. You can also book an Amtrak trip or Lyft ride, or even talk to Einstein from National Geographic.
Machine learning is also enabling automatic, real-time language translations, as well as identifying the content of your pictures and videos.
Is there a way for you to make your customer experience more convenient with these tools?
Bob: Convenience is so important! We don’t want to spend a lot of time and that includes reading a lot of text. The next trend mentioned is visual and video marketing. We’ve been talking a lot about this for a while. Brands are now expected to do video.
You want to tell your story and video is a great way to do it. There are tools out there that help you create videos simply.
You don’t have to produce an academy-award winning film and the more you do it the easier it gets. I would say this is more than a trend; it is happening now! Make sure you are incorporating visuals and video.
Donna: Another trend we’ve talked about before is “no click searches”. The fact that you can search and get the answer to your question immediately without having to click through to a website, is a game changer.
Making sure your business information shows up through the knowledge graph, as a featured answer, or in response to a smart speaker query is something that should be on your radar.
Bob: Yes, consumer behavior has changed a lot and the next trend is how the customer journey has changed. It’s become a lot more fragmented across devices, and consumers today prefer purchases right from their phone.
The mobile experience has actually increased impulse shopping. It’s important to map out what the customer journey for your product or service looks like. Then take a look at your website. Do you have the content there that speaks to all parts of your customer’s journey?
Donna: That ties into the last trend, which is marketing as an experience not advertising.
It’s something that is more interactive, creative, exciting, or social. One of the things that we often hear is that everybody wants to buy, but nobody wants to be sold to.
And this is where using storytelling in your marketing is a good way to give people the experience that they are looking for in 2020.
Bob: That’s it for today’s episode. You can find the link to the trends article and a transcript of today’s podcast at DelosInc.com/115.
