Bob: Hi, I’m Bob Clark.
Donna: And I’m Donna Botti. We’re with Delos Inc and we make the web work for you. In today’s Tech News Tuesday episode, we’re talking about Instagram tagging. Social Media Examiner has a good explainer up about the differences between mentioning an account, and tagging an account, as well as using location tags and product tags.
Bob: Wow, that’s a lot of tags Donna, and that’s part of the problem – they’re all called tags, but they do different things.
Donna: Right, for a regular post, you can mention someone by placing the @ symbol in front of their user name in the captions or the comments of a post. Anyone can mention someone else in the comments of your post, and the mention will appear in their notifications.
Bob: Tagging someone is done on the image of the post, and can only be done by the content creator. Tags appear in a separate notification that stands out more. Your tagged content also appears on a separate tab of their Instagram profile.
Donna: Another type of tag is the location tag. The location appears with the post and is clickable to search all posts with that location. This is great when people are looking for something to do in a specific area for example.
Bob: And as we’ve discussed before, you can add shopping tags on the products in your post as well.
Donna: Now all these types of tags are different from hashtags, which are another way to get discovered on Instagram. Use tags and mentions of other people, location tags and shoppable tags, in order to extend your Instagram reach beyond your followers.
